In northwest Montana the economy depends largely on
forestry and tourism. In order for our local economy to flourish
well into the future, citizens of this area need to be educated
in the art and science of healthy forests and ecosystems.
Despite their efforts, overburdened public schools fall short of
meeting these important educational needs. Ravenwood offers a
place for children and adults to immerse themselves in an
outdoor classroom with the guidance of our experienced staff. We
intend for our programs to have a pebble in the pond effect.
Increased stewardship and wise management of our precious
environment will be the outer ripples created by local people
who understand and appreciate the dynamics of their place.
Valley Perspectives:
When Amy and Doug asked us to share some perspectives on life in
the Flathead Valley, we couldn’t help but look at our time here
as just a blink in the long history of this incredible place.
It’s easy to see why so many folks have long wanted to come to
the Flathead to plant roots. This place is spectacularly
beautiful and the people who live here generally share a sense
of community and a, “we’re all in this together” approach to
problem solving. This legacy has deep roots, and includes the
various tribes whose land-based societies were created in the
context of this inspiring and bountiful country. The air is
still clean, the water is still clear, and we have the honor of
caretaking some of the richest topsoil and most pristine forests
in the world. These living features of the land need to be
stewarded and utilized wisely as we face the many challenges
brought forth by a booming regional population. Ravenwood looks
forward to being a leader in the ongoing efforts to maintain top
notch quality of life for the children of today and the many
generations of future Flathead Valley residents yet to come.

Why we do it:
Ravenwood History
Ravenwood founders Laura and Brett Holmquist have deep roots in
outdoor education. Both grew up with expansive back yards in the
big, wide country of Montana. As young professionals in
Yellowstone doing biological research and conducting education
programs for youth, the couple witnessed a fundamental lack of
ecological understanding among many of the young people they
encountered. For many kids, these programs had been their first
serious outdoor adventures, even among those who grew up in
Montana! Laura and Brett also witnessed a real thirst for
learning and a noticeable shift in awareness and appreciation
among their students when they were out on the landscape. The Holmquists saw a critical gap between understanding and interest
in the natural world and decided to meld their various talents
in the science and education fields to do something about
it--the inspiration to create Ravenwood was born.
With no budget and only the volunteer capital of its founders,
first generation board members, and local volunteers, ideas
began to develop and program concepts emerged. Soon enough, the
networking began to bear fruit and a landowner with facilities
near Bigfork offered to donate the use of his property.
Fundraising began and teachers across the state were contacted
with information about Camp Corvid, a field study program for
elementary students. By October 2003, programming began and
positive feedback flowed in from students, teachers, parents,
and community members. Ravenwood was on its way!
With each following year, more programs were developed and more
kids, teachers, and parents began to understand how much fun
outdoor learning could be. Ravenwood students were connecting
with nature, their community, and gaining a better understanding
of their own gifts and talents as a result.
Today, Ravenwood offers a wide variety of programs for kids of
all ages and teaches educators and parents the mentoring skills
upon which our curriculum is based. Ravenwood is now established
as a premier outdoor learning center in the region and looks to
find a permanent home in the near future.
